Contract Accounts: Make Authorization Part of the Design

‍

An account does more than hold value. Its authorization rules decide which actions are permitted and whose approval counts. Stellar contract accounts let developers express those rules in smart contract logic, creating a design space for asset applications that need a more specific policy than a conventional account provides.

‍
A contract account defines a custom authorization check for supported contract interactions. That flexibility makes the design of the account itself a central part of the security assessment.

‍

The starting point is a clear relationship between permission and purpose:
‍

Define the action, identify who may approve it and make the authorization rule enforce that decision. Then review every power able to change the rule.

‍

Four questions for a contract account design:

  • Authorization scope: Identify the contract calls the account is allowed to authorize and the conditions applied to each one. A policy is useful when its permissions match the intended operation and its limits are clear to the people relying on it.
  • ‍Credential support: Establish which signature mechanisms the implementation and target network support. Custom authorization is a capability; quantum resistance depends on the specific mechanism and the complete design.
  • ‍Recovery and upgrades: Explain who can replace credentials or change contract behavior. Those powers can affect the same assets as the normal authorization path, so their protection belongs in the same review.
  • ‍Transaction submission: Distinguish the account authorizing a contract action from the account submitting the transaction and paying its fee. Stellar supports separate authorization entries for contract interactions. A contract account’s custom policy does not, by itself, change the signing rules of that transaction source or the network.

Contract accounts are one part of the wider architecture. Issuer controls, asset contracts, holder accounts and supporting services can retain separate responsibilities. Map those connections before deciding what a particular authorization design protects, and keep the deployed configuration identifiable for review.
